A face to face focus group is irreplaceable. There is nothing like having people in one room and seeing their faces as they discuss the topic in question….it gives a very personal and honest look into the subject being discussed. Its usual for groups to be made up of 8 individuals but they can equally be in smaller groups of 4 or 5 which are often useful for research with young people or b2b projects.
Individual Depth Interviews
Often used for hard to reach respondents that may not all be able to make it to a discussion group.It also lets the respondent be completely open with the researcher as there are no other people to think about. IDI’s are often conducted over the phone as well as in person in the respondents home. Accompanied shops are IDI’s but within the shopping environment so the researcher can see at point of choice/sale how the consumer thinks.
